Fyrish Substation
Fyrish Substation – Project Summary
BT Bell were instructed to provide Civil and Structural design services for SSE’s Fyrish Substation, a 275/132kV installation forming part of the Beauly–Dounreay Phase 2 Reinforcement scheme. This project is a key step in strengthening Scotland’s transmission network and enabling increased renewable energy integration.
Our Role
Working in collaboration with Siemens, we delivered:
- Foundation design for AIS and GIB structures across the site.
- Structural design for the GIS building.
- Civil design for two bunds to accommodate the new Grid Transformers.
- Design of a steel portal framed control building, tailored to the operational needs of the substation.
- Site drainage systems and associated infrastructure.
Project Background
Located near Alness in the Highlands, Fyrish Substation is a strategically important development within the wider reinforcement of the Dounreay–Beauly line. The works included new AIS circuits and the installation of the latest generation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Super Grid Transformers, ensuring the site is equipped to meet the demands of a modern, low-carbon energy network.
Project Impact
The completion of Fyrish Substation enhances the resilience of the national grid while supporting the continued expansion of renewable energy in Scotland. BT Bell’s engineering expertise played a central role in the safe and efficient delivery of this major infrastructure project.
